Cali Goes to the Grand Canyon

Welcome to my new blog postings from California! I'm starting out with our drive from Texas to California. We picked up Cali, our new mini schnauzer puppy, along the way in Oklahoma. (Cali--get it? Short for California.) We call her Cali Girl, and she's a sweetie, but Don and I are realizing we are getting kind of old for all this chasing after a new puppy! Here she is on the drive out, and no, we weren't driving, we were parked in a lot for a break:

Cali pretty much thought she ruled the show!
It took us three days of driving to get from Dallas to Long Beach, but we did make a stop at the Grand Canyon since it was on the way. I had seen pictures of it, and knew it was magnificent, and big, and unbelievable. It was all that and more. Pictures just don't do it justice--it is so much bigger than a picture can convey! In fact, from up high, the depth is deceptive. It is MUCH deeper and bigger than it looks! Anyway, you can judge for yourself from the following pics!

The famous "Horseshoe" mesa. We drove along the canyon for miles to get a view of both sides of the horseshoe.

The canyon spreads across a distance of up to 10 miles in places!

That little bit of blue-green in the middle left of the picture at the bottom of the canyon is the Colorado River!

Of course, it was too hot to leave Cali in the car, so she
got to ride in a sling around my neck!

The girls in the next picture took our photo for us!

Sweet girls who offered to take our picture. They loved Cali--she makes friends fast!

As we were leaving the park, I spotted this--elk? deer? We thought at first it was a statue until it started moving!

5,000 feet down to the bottom of the canyon!

Hope you enjoyed our tour of the Grand Canyon! By the way, Cali wasn't even 2 months old, and she already has 5 states under her belt. Looks like we are raising yet another Brown traveler!
